Savannah – a new breed of cat

A Savannah cat is a cross between an African Serval and a domesticated housecat. Servals have long been admired for their magnificent beauty. They possess an elegant golden coat marked with strikingly clear black spots. Not only is their coat beautiful, but also their body type and personality. Many states do not allow private ownership of exotic cats (Servals), but do allow hybrids (Savannahs). Savannahs are smaller (approximately 25 pounds) and more manageable than a Serval (do not require special diets or facilities). Savannahs simply possess the beauty of the Serval, but are considered domestic. Savannahs are the largest hybrid feline available. They are excellent with other pets and children. Savannahs are extremely intelligent and "talk" quite often. They create strong bonds with their owners. Savannahs are the exotic feline of the 21st century!

Help with hair

If you have pets then you know all about hair all over your house. With my German Shepherd it doesn’t matter how many times you vacuum, sweep or brush the dog, you are still going to have hair all over the house.

I started using the FURminator deShedding tool because it gets down into the undercoat and removes dead hair. This tool takes off so much dead hair that it looks like you are shearing a lamb.

Eliminating dead hair helps both cats and dogs, however, with cats it also helps reduce the number of fur balls they are going to cough up.

Pet of the Week

McKenna – Downers Grove, IL

Hi, my name is McKenna. I am a 19 month old, calico DLH. I get to live in a foster home while I wait for my forever family. I feel fortunate because I know how hard it is on the other cats who have to live in cages. My perfect home is one where there are no children. I do much better in a quieter home, in fact I am quite social and loving with adults and other cats.

If you’d like to see me please contact the West Suburban Humane Society, 1901 W. Ogden Ave, Downers Grove, IL, phone number 630-960-9600.

Homemade bird suet

Melt suet in the microwave and pour the mixture into a Glad plastic container. Before the mixture hardens add peanuts, raisins, apple bits or other types of bird food. You can also add some peanut butter to the suet before you melt it to give the birds some extra fatty protein during the winter months.

Winter bird feeding

As winter quickly approaches it is time to start preparing for feeding our feathered friends during the winter.

Fatty foods are essential for our winter birds to help them maintain their body temperature of 108 degrees, which is necessary for their survival.

Below are some great sources of fatty foods.

Suet
Peanut Butter
Seeds
Sunflower seeds
Millet
Cracked corn
Niger thistle
Nut meats

It is less expensive to purchase individual type of seeds in bulk and mix your own seeds.

Meatball – Downers Grove, IL

Hi!! My name is Meatball. I’m a 3 year-old Bulldog mix. I am a fun, goofy guy that loves to play, play, play. I've never met a tug toy I didn't like. I get along great with other dogs but really don't care much for cats. I would do best in a home with children 16 years and older. If I sound like a good dog for you and your family, stop by and pay me a visit. You won't be disappointed!

Cats can be so helpful!

As I sit and work at my computer with papers all over in front of me, I find that I need to regularly share my workspace with my cat. When I write a letter or even better Christmas cards I again have to share my space with my cat.

Why do cats want to sit and lay all over your papers? Some say it is because the paper is cool and feels good. I personally think cats do this to get extra attention and extra pet time. And, why not – it works!

I try to free up my computer space and put my cat on my lap while I type or write. But, that just isn’t as good as sitting right on top of all of your work. So, the best thing I find to do is adjust my paper, my keyboard and my mouse and snuggle my cat while I type away. Besides, it makes working so much more pleasant when I can sit there and listen to my cat’s contented purr as I work.

What do your cat’s love to help you do?

Time to clean out the bird houses

Fall and early spring is the best time to clean out your bird houses. The best way to clean out a bird house is to wear gloves and avoid inhaling any dust from the bird house. Get a garbage bag ready and pull as much of the nesting material out of the bird house as you can. Next get a putty knife and scrape any remaining matter out of the bird house. Then check to make sure that all of the vents and drainage holes are clear. Make sure to seal or tie the garbage back shut when you are done in case there are any parasites in the nest box material.

Puppy Stairs

If you have a puppy, small dog or aging dog, puppy stairs might be right for you. The Puppy Stair ramp helps prevent injuries caused from jumping off furniture and helps dogs prone to hip problems, such as arthritis, joint and spinal problems, bone invertebral disk disease, bone kneecap problems and much more.

The Puppy Stairs are light weight, easy to move, no hard edges and washable. The cubes are 2 pounds each, making them very easy to use and bring with you while traveling. The ramps even help you so that you don’t always have to be there to lift your pet up and down off the furniture.

Puppy Stairs are great for cats and other household animals that should not be

jumping up and down from furniture.

Buddy – Boca Raton, FL

Black Lab mix. 1.5 year-old male, not yet neutered. Housebroken, 40 lbs.
Can I be YOUR Buddy? I'm a really cool dog in need of my big break in life. I've already overcome the challenge of being born with a slightly deformed front foot. I'm missing a few toes, but I'm still a perfect 10! I run and play and get on with my life like any other pooch. But I need a forever home now, and someone to love (I have so much love to give you!). I like kids and other dogs (cats, unknown). I'd love to hang out with you and fit into your lifestyle. Whatever it is you love to do, can I do it with you? It'll be twice as much fun with me as your BUDDY!

Pet of the Week

Snoball – Downers Grove, IL

Ironic, isn’t it: a black cat named Snoball. If it catches people’s attention, I am definitely okay with it. I am a young fella who found himself outdoors in winter until a local animal control agency scooped me up to safety. They had a lot of other cats there, so they asked WSHS to take a few. I was one of the lucky ones who got picked because I was very friendly and reached out of my cage to get their attention. How could they say no to such pleading? Once here, I adjusted very easily. Everyone loves me and I get so much cuddling, I couldn’t ask for more while I wait for a home of my very own. I’m up for just about anything, except going outside. That’s a deal breaker. I don’t ever want to get lost outside again. If you want a chatty, fun guy, then look no further. Here I am! Black DSH, female, 2 years old, neutered, but not declawed.

For more information please contact the West Suburban Humane Society, 1901 W. Ogden Ave, Downers Grove, IL, phone number 630-960-9600.
