Hate ants in your Hummingbird feeder?

If you have a problem with ants getting into your Hummingbird feeder, try using the Ant Moat! The Ant Moat is a small plastic cup that fits between your hanger and the feeder. Fill the cup with water or petroleum jelly and it will stop the ants from getting to your Hummingbird feeder.

Baby – Tampa, FL

Hi! My name is Baby. I’m a handsome black boy that was brought into the shelter originally after my family became homeless. I’m a special kitty that has a birth defect that makes my right leg shorter than my left, although you would never know it. I can run and play like everyone else. It doesn’t affect me in the slightest, but it is one of the first things you’ll notice about me; but it just adds to my character! I am very reserved and sweet! My favorite toys include paper balls and string, so I’m easily entertained. According to my previous owners, I get along well with other cats, and have lived in a home with other dogs before, although I tend to ignore them. Children sometimes make me nervous, so I would do best in an adult only environment. I’m also a Meet Your Match Purple Private Investigator. This means that, “I’m working undercover to keep an eye on you and your household. You may not even know you’re under surveillance. I can vanish into thin air if anyone or anything interferes with my investigation. If you need a cat who knows how to stay out of trouble and will always keep your secrets, I just might take your case.”

I was brought in with my brother, who has since been adopted, so now I’m waiting for my chance to have a new forever home. I sometimes get overlooked because I’m a black cat, and since I’ve been at the shelter for so long, a generous donor has sponsored my adoption fee. Mambo – Downers Grove, IL

Hi, my name is Mambo. I was recently returned to the shelter because I became too protective of my elderly owners. The staff at WSHS felt that I could use some training so they sent me to a 2 week training class at Suburban K-9 in Barlett. Well, I am back from training (and better than ever I might add!) and ready to find my forever home. I now know all of my basic obedience commands and am leash trained. I am good with other dogs. Dog food aggression

If your dog glares at you, snarls, growls and positions himself between you and the food he is actually saying to you "this is mine, go away, find your own". He is basically telling you that he considers himself as the leader or alpha dog in your household. Dog food aggression (sometimes called canine possession aggression) is a dominance issue, it is serious and needs to be addressed immediately, it won't just go away.

We've all made the mistake of laughing and even encouraging our feisty little dogs when they first display the "cute" signs of dog food aggression. Don't fall into this trap! Food or toy aggression in dogs should never be tolerated as you never know when it can escalate into something more dangerous for you or a family member.

Cadence – Tampa, FL

Hey, I’m Cadence! I was brought into the HSTB with a chain imbedded in my neck that had to be surgically removed. Since I was chained up for all those years I developed a little incontinence problem. The vet here set me up with some inexpensive pills that I’ll need to take twice a day. I’ve been in foster care since I came in. My foster mom & the vet noticed that my neck wasn’t healing a after the first surgery, so they went in to take a closer look and found that there was and elastic pony tail band completely imbedded under skin! The band was extracted and now I’m working on getting better and enjoying a comfortable life! It is still important that the cats and dogs stay away from my food though! I discovered that I like to run and play and give kisses. My dream would be to go to a home with someone who can spend a lot of time with me as I do have to go outside every four hours or so. I am completely housebroken and never had an accident the whole month that I was with my foster family. My foster dad works from home and I just lounge around in the office with him until it is time for me and his two other little dogs to go outside! If you have the time and love to give me, will you please come visit? You will find my charm and sad eyes irresistible!

Akeela – Downers Grove, IL

Hi, I’m Akeela! I was adopted from this shelter as a kitten. Somehow I ended up at an animal control facility where I had been picked up as a stray. I was in pretty rough shape, but after a few weeks, my gorgeous coat returned as did my health. My markings are pretty unique and I am a very loving boy. Cleaning seed feeders

Spring is here and it is time to get your feeders ready for the busy Spring and Summer bird season!
Decomposing and moldy seeds and hulls that accumulate on the feeder trays can make your birds sick. In addition to bird droppings on and around the feeders can spread infectious bird diseases. Experts say that you should clean your feeder every other week and more often in with heavy usage or in wet weather (which increases the mold problem). To clean your feeder, was it thoroughly in hot soapy water. If there have been reports of salmonella in your area, or you have notices sick birds, soak your feeder in one part bleach to nine parts of water. Make sure to rinse well to remove the bleach. Make sure the feeder is completely dry before filling it up again.

You also need to clean up the area below the feeders to remove the build up of hulls, uneaten seeds and other waste. Not only is this unhealthy for your birds, but it can cause you a rodent problem.

Sparrow-Resistant Bluebird House

Many people attempt to attract Bluebirds to their yard by hanging a birdhouse for them. So many times Sparrows end up moving in before the Bluebirds get a chance to find your new birdhouse. Doctors Foster and Smith feature a new bird house that is “Sparrow resistant.”

The bird house features;

Unique design welcomes bluebirds, discourages unwanted sparrow guests

Front panel latch opening enables easy observation and cleaning

1" eastern white pine construction optimizes insulation and strength

Approved by the North American Bluebird Society, this bluebird house is designed to deter sparrows. Some studies have shown that bluebirds prefer a slot entrance to the standard circular hole entrance and sparrows prefer the opposite. Also, sparrows tend to avoid shallow homes so the Sparrow-Resistant Bluebird House was constructed to be only 5" deep and includes a wooden insert to adjust the depth to a mere 3-1/2". Sparrows will avoid this depth, but bluebirds will still occupy the house. Front panel has latch opening for easy cleaning. Handcrafted from 1" eastern white pine for insulation and durability. High-Rise Syndrome

Spring has sprung and with warmer weather comes open windows. Unfortunately, unscreened windows can be a threat to felines. Veterinarians have referred to cats falling out of windows as High-Rise Syndrome.

High-Rise Syndrome mostly relates to cats and the ASPCA lists a few facts regarding this phenomenon.
*Cats don’t deliberately jump from high places that are dangerous. Injuries relating to a fall from a high-rise, terrace or fire escape are accidental.
*Cats focus on what interests them. A distraction could cause them to lose their balance and fall.
*Window surfaces can be difficult for cats to cling to as they can be made of brick or concrete.
*Cats do not always land squarely on their feet which can lead to pelvis and head injuries.
*Cats can be injured just as greatly from short falls as shorter distances do not give them a chance to adjust their body posture.

Please help prevent High-Rise Syndrome by making sure that window screens are snuggly secured in window frames and note that cast can slip through childproof window guards.

Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month

April is the ASPCA’s Prevention of Cruelty to Animals month. Supporters are urged to “Go Orange for Animals” throughout the month of April to raise awareness for the cause.

The ASPCA web site advises ways to recognize cruelty. Animal behavior alone cannot be used as an indication alone. Kristen Collins who’s part of the ASPCA’s Animal Behavior Center states, “The best way to tell whether a pet is being or has been abused is to examine him and his surrounding environment.”

Some physical signs:
*Collar so tight it is embedded in the pet’s neck
*Open wounds left untreated or signs of multiple healed wounds
*Untreated skin conditions and patchy, bumpy, scaly skin
*Heavy discharge from eyes or nose
*Inability to walk or stand normally

Some environmental signs:
*Pets tied up outside without adequate food or water
*Pets kept outside without shelter in inclement weather conditions
*Surrounded by feces, garbage or objects that could harm them
*A cage that is too confining for the pet’s size

Texas – Downers Grove, IL

Howdy y’all, my name is Texas. I have had a pretty hard life and I’m about nine years old. I am a medium sized neutered Shepherd Mix I was owned by an elderly lady who passed away in May. Her family didn't want me so they brought me here to the West Suburban Humane Society. My owner loved me but because she was elderly she never took me for a walk, never took me to the vet or socialized me around other animals. I didn't even know how to walk on a leash. Although, I am house trained. The shelter decided that I needed some work so they sent me to Midwest Canine Behavioral and Socialization Center in Des Plaines for two weeks of training. While I was there I learned all of my basic obedience commands, "sit", "down", "heel", "stay", and "come". I got along ok with the other dogs in day care but I would prefer to be the only pet in the household. I don't trust new people immediately, it takes me awhile to warm up. Once I do though, I will be your best friend for life. I am looking for a quiet home that won't expect too much of me and will let me live out the rest of my life in a safe, comfortable environment. Baby – Tampa Bay, FL

Hello everyone, I’m Baby! I’m special girl with an amazing story, and I’m truly lucky to be alive. I was found a few months back at a construction site in the bay area. The workers there noticed that I was pregnant and fairly unhealthy, so they kept an eye on me to make sure I was okay. When I came closer to giving birth, one of workers took me home and cared of me until I had my pups. Everyone made it okay, and he quickly made arrangements to bring us into the HSTB. Shortly after, all my kids found wonderful homes, but the staff at the shelter took notice that I had Heartworm Disease. Right now I am heartworm positive, and I’m undergoing treatments so that I can be at my full potential when I’m done. I’m available through the foster to adopt program in the meantime. It’s very important that I maintain a low activity level, and that I’m living in a stress-free environment while I am undergoing treatment. That means short walks only, and no getting excited!! I know this is a hard situation for both myself and a potential adopter, but as soon as I’m done with my treatments I’ll be free to run, play, and wag my tail as much as possible. Green Pet Products

Please consider environmentally friendly ways to pick up after your pet. A lot of dog owners use polyethylene based grocery bags to clean up after their dog. Unfortunately, the polyethylene bags can last hundreds of years and trap the waste that would normally decompose on its own.

There are biodegradable doggie bags and cat pan liners available in the market. There are also cat litters which do not contain clumping clay which harms the earth and could harm your furry loved one along with biodegradable cat liners.

One product that is 100% biodegradable is the BioBag which is made of GMO free certified corn along with using soy based inks. The BioBag is available for dogs and cats. Pets Go Green

Environmental impact is a wide growing concern and living green can be applied to pets as well.

Planet Green recommends a few green tips regarding pets.

1. Why not consider a ‘recycled’ pet? Shelters are filled with reusable, adoptable pets.
2. Consider the plight of recycled pets in shelters and make sure to spay or neuter
your pet so you are contributing positively to managing the pet population.
3. Buy certified organic pet foods as they must meet strict standards set by the USDA. Or make your own pet food following recipes found in books and online. If you decide to make your own pet food, mind the protein, vegetable and carbohydrate ratios recommended by your vet before feeding your creation to your loved one.
4. Buy pet products that are constructed of recycled materials. Bedding and toys can be found that use recycled items in their creation.
5. Clean up after your pet in a green manner by using biodegradable doggie bags and avoiding clumping clay cat litter.
6. Wash your pet with shampoos and conditioners that do not contain lauryl/laureth sulfates.
7. Use a non toxic natural flea control product for prevention and control of fleas.
8. Find natural organic remedies for ‘accidents’ or to remove odor.

Pet Diabetes

We often hear and see information about diabetes in adults and children. What about dogs and cats with diabetes? Pet owners often worry that the diagnosis of diabetes is like a death sentence for their furry loved one. Yet, with the proper care there’s little change in the quality of life.

Similar to humans the best ways to avoid pet diabetes are watching your pet’s weight, what you feed your friend and providing plenty of daily exercise.

Two urgent signs to look for in your dog or cat are excessive drinking and urination along with a large appetite yet bony appearance. Additional signs are sudden weight loss or gain, dehydration, thinning of the skin, vision and balance difficulties.

Red Cross Animal Lifesaver Award

Willie, a Quaker parrot, is the first bird to win the American Red Cross Animal Lifesaver Award. Willie alerted his owner to a choking toddler by squawking, “Momma, baby. Momma, baby.” when 2 year old Hannah was choking on a Pop Tart. The owner, Megan Howard, performed the Heimlich just in time as Hannah’s lips and face were turning blue. Megan knew there was an emergency as Willie is normally a quiet bird. Megan notes that Willie started to screaming and flapping his wings. There was panic in his voice like she had never heard before from Willie. Megan is Hannah’s babysitter not mother. Needless to say, Hannah’s mother is grateful to both Willie and Megan.

Red Cross spokesman, Jim Rettew, stated, "Obviously, Willie played a very important role in saving a little girl's life. This was not just a bird chirping for his food. He saw that there was an emergency and used exemplary behavior to notify the babysitter that the child was choking."

Usually dogs are recognized by the American Red Cross with the Animal Lifesaver Award. The Denver chapter of the American Red Cross had nominated Willie for the award.

Tour For Life 2009

Since 2001, the North Shore Animal League has traveled around the nation in a “Tour For Life” campaign which is the largest cooperative pet adoption event. The goal is to find homes for hundreds of orphaned dogs, cats, puppies and kittens along with raising public awareness of the life these shelter animals live.

The tour stops in more than 20 cities across America. This year’s spokesperson is Kathryn Erbe from the TV show, Law and Order: Criminal Intent. This year the tour celebrates mixed breed dogs to help awareness of American Mutt-i-grees Club, AMC, which promotes shelter adoptions discouraging pet’s being purchased by retailers who are supplied by puppy mills. The tour lasts until mid April and is co-sponsored by Purina.

Reasons to Pick Up after Your Pet

Canine Parvo was brought to recent attention with Oprah’s loss of Ivan and Sadie’s steps to recovery. Parvovirus is spread through canine feces. It’s a danger to puppies while being vaccinated and to older dogs with aging immune systems. Perhaps the spread of this disease could be lessened if people picked up after their pets.

Dog waste is listed as one of the top contributors to bacteria in contaminated water. Dog feces can carry E-coli, salmonella and giardia.

The Virginia Department of Conservation lists 10 reasons to be a Pooper-Scooper. A few of the reasons given were that people can step in the waste and spread it to their home and office environment, the waste can get carried away into waterways, and roundworms and hookworms can be transmitted to humans and other animals. Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race

The Iditarod is a competitive race held in Alaska that spans over 1150 miles and is called “The Last Great Race on Earth”. Teams consisting of 12-16 dogs with their musher cover the distance in 10-17 days. The race terrain includes mountain ranges, frozen rivers, forests, tundra in below zero temperatures. The weather can be hazardous let alone the environment.

The race is described as pitting man and dog against nature. There are regulations in place that insist particular equipment as must haves such as an arctic parka, sleeping bag, snow shoes, musher food, dog food and boots for the dog’s feet to protect their feet from ice and snow. There are veterinarians posted along check points to monitor the health of the dogs and administer aid when necessary.

This year marked the 37th event and the race began on March 7 yet there is already a winner. Lance Mackey won this year covering the distance in 9 days and 21 hours. This is his third consecutive win. His 15 member dog team included 6 dogs that had been on his previous winning teams.

The race isn’t without controversy. As of March 20 three dogs have died in the 2009 race. The causes of their deaths are unknown at this point. Animal rights groups think the race is cruel to the dogs and protest the treatment of the dogs before the race even begins. Canine Parvovirus

Sadie had a brother named Ivan that was also adopted by Oprah after appearing on her TV show March 6, 2009. Ivan, a Cocker Spaniel, succumbed to parvovirus late last week. Sadie is also infected yet she has been receiving treatment and has stabilized.

Winfrey was quoted in the Chicago Tribune as stating, “I’m saddened by his passing, though we only had him for a weekend. I remain hopeful that Sadie will pull through.” Oprah adopted Sadie and Ivan from PAWS, Pets Are Worth Saving, in Chicago. PAWS commented, “Our thoughts and prayers are with Oprah Winfrey on the loss of Ivan, and we are hopeful that Sadie makes a full recovery.” PAWS noted that in 2008, out of the 501 puppies taken in, 99.2% either did not contract Parvovirus or were cured of the disease.”

Parvovirus is an illness transmitted through fecal matter and vomit of infected dogs. Puppies are most susceptible to parvovirus due to their underdeveloped immune systems. Parvovirus, referred to as Parvo, is an airborne illness that attacks white blood cells and can also attack the intestinal system. Humans cannot contract the disease yet can be carriers through clothing or shoes. Symptoms of Parvo can include bloody diarrhea or feces, dehydration, lethargy, vomiting, loss of appetite, and a high fever. Vaccinations do not ensure protection as infection can occur in between vaccinations. A way to possibly prevent the disease is to avoid areas where they could come in contact with the disease like parks, play dates, obedience classes, groomers, and anywhere other puppies roam, congregate. Kathleen Heneghan, a former president of the Chicago Veterinary Medical Association recommends treating a puppy like a new born baby as “they’re not fully protected until they’re 4 months of age.”

I’m introduced as Jillian yet I am a bit timid even if called by name. Three years ago I was born to this intimidating world. I am a female spayed brown tabby who still has her claws. When you visit the shelter, one of the first places you will see cats is called the “Shy Cat Room.” This is where I live and if it weren't for this room, I'd be living outside. You see, I was living in an area with many outdoor cats, who have litter after litter, year after year. I was trapped by a shelter volunteer who was planning to have me spayed and released back to my yard. This is a great option for cats who are too afraid of people to be taken inside, but this volunteer saw something in me that made her think I might be able to be socialized. If it weren't for the shy cat room, I would not have stood a chance, but here I am, and I have been coming out of my shell gradually. I would like to live in a home with other cats. I’m not sure how I feel about children or dogs as most were a scary experience when I was out alone in the world. I need a home where my people will be patient with me. It will be a slow road, but one worth going down.

National Poison Prevention Week

March 15-21 is National Poison Prevention Week in the U.S. The ASPCA, American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, toxicologists have created a video advising of the 17 common household plants that could be harmful to your furry loved one.
The 17 plants discussed are lilies, marijuana, sago palm, tulip bulbs, rhododendron, oleander, castor bean, cyclamen, kalanchoe, yew, amaryllis, autumn crocus, chrysanthemum, english ivy, peace lily, pothos and schefflera.

Hypoallergenic Dog

The First Family is looking to adopt a hypoallergenic dog. Yet, there is no true hypoallergenic pet as usually what causes an allergic reaction is the microscopic skin flakes from the animal. Dr. Zaid Jabbar, an allergist with Edward Medical Ground in Bolingbrook, IL, states that the tiny particles cause the immune system to produce antibodies which causes sneezing, a stuffy nose, runny and/or itchy eyes. Each person’s immune system differs and what one family member does not react to another family member might.

There are certain dog breeds that induce fewer allergies. A few of those breeds are Bichon Frise, soft-coated wheaten Terriers, Poodles, Yorkshire Terriers, Lhasa apso, Maltese, Schnauzer and Portuguese water dog.

Shelters are a great place for those looking for a possible hypoallergenic dog as fostering is a possibility. Prospective owners would get a chance to test their reactions to their new possible family member in their homes without making the adoption final.

A Premeditating Chimpanzee

A study conducted at a Swedish zoo suggests that some apes can plan ahead like humans through observing the actions of an alpha male chimpanzee at the Furuvik Zoo located 93 miles from Stockholm, Sweden. A report was written by Lund University Ph.D. student Mathias Osvath.

According to the report in the journal of Current Biology, the 31 male chimpanzee, Santino, started collecting rocks and disks from concrete boulders found inside his enclosure. Yet, Santino waited until the middle of the day to bombard visitors with his collection.

Santino was observed tapping on a concrete boulder to find the weak spots so he could knock out a piece of the boulder. If he had a concrete piece that was too big for throwing, he would break it in to smaller pieces before adding it to his ammunition collection. He also collected rocks from the moat in is island enclosure.

Since Santino stayed calm while collecting his arsenal yet was agitated when hurling them suggests that the behavior was not emotionally driven. Osvath states, "It implies that they have a highly developed consciousness, including lifelike mental simulations of potential events." He also acknowledges that there a differences within big chimpanzees and that his observations do not mean that all chimpanzees are capable of advanced planning.

No one was seriously injured as Santino has poor aim and they're probably thankful that he did not include feces amongst his weapons.

Pennsylvania Kennel Accident

In a freak accident at Pazzazz Pet Boarding kennel, Martha Stewart’s chow puppy, Genghis Khan, was killed on Friday, March 06, 2009. Genghis Khan was one of 17 killed in the accidental propane explosion. Fifteen died instantly and 2 more died over the weekend. The kennel, which is located in eastern PA, breeds and trains show dogs. Genghis Khan was the grandson of Martha’s previous chow, Paw Paw, which passed away in April 2008 at age 12. She adopted him in Dec. 2008 when he was 7 weeks old.

Officials are not sure of the exact cause of the explosion yet think that static electricity or a spark could have ignited the blaze. The propane exploded during a delivery which set the pens on fire and injured the driver, Timothy Kleinhagen. He was badly burned and is listed in critical condition.

Martha stated on her blog that she is deeply saddened by the death of Genghis Khan and that her heart goes out to Karen Tracy (one of the co-owners) and she hopes for a speedy recovery for those (both pets and humans) injured in this terrible event.

Oprah’s Newest Family Member

Sadly, Oprah lost Sophie and Solomen, her beloved cocker spaniels, last year. On Sunday, March 1, 2009, Oprah Winfrey and Stedman Graham adopted a 10 week old Cocker Spaniel puppy from PAWS Chicago. Winfrey named her Sadie. Sadie was introduced to the world on Oprah’s show, Friday, March 5, 2009. Oprah commented, “I’m a mom again.” The show helped find homes for the last three siblings seeking adoption. They were all placed with homes by midday Friday after appearing on the show. Winfrey encouraged viewers to adopt from shelters where many people are giving up pets in these tough economic times.

Sadie was one of 11 puppies and 6 of the litter were brought to one of PAWS Chicago adoption facilities. Sadie’s adoption helped bring attention to PAWS which stands for Pets Are Worth Saving. PAWS is a no kill humane organization founded in 1997. PAWS is a non-profit organization that receives no city,state or federal funding. PAWS owner, Paula Fasseas, said that the web site has been inundated as well as the phones and adoption center. She is thrilled because of the attention that is being brought to the homeless animals. Winfrey sponsors a room at the PAWS Clybourn facility in honor of Sophie and Oprah has been a long time supporter of PAWS Chicago.

Black Dog Syndrome

Black Dog Syndrome refers to the challenge black dogs face regarding adoption as they usually linger the longest at shelters. Basically, black dogs suffer “low adoption, high euthanasia”. Although it is difficult to find exact statistics on this phenomenon, many animal shelter workers will attest to the existence of this issue. The problem applies to black cats in shelters too.

Potential adopters are usually looking for smaller dogs with light coats. A few other theories for this occurrence are perceived aggressiveness, black animals don’t show well in pictures, superstition of bad luck and shedding concerns as the hair is more visible on furniture, rugs.

Most of the public is not aware that black dogs and cats face such a terrible obstacle. Please raise awareness and note all the loving black dogs and cats when viewing possible additions to your family.

Linda Estrada, president of the Animal Welfare League in Chicago Ridge, IL, reminds people that “you should worry about temperament, personality and if the breed fits in your family well. That’s more important than looks”.

Socks, one time presidential kitty, passed away on Feb. 20, 2009. Socks was adopted in 1991 by the Clinton family when he jumped into Chelsea’s arms after a piano lesson in Little Rock, AR. Socks moved in to the White House with the Clinton’s and was the principal Clinton pet until Buddy, a Labrador Retriever, was adopted in 1997. Socks did not get along with Buddy so when the Clinton’s left the White House in 2001, they took Buddy and left Socks to the care of Bill Clinton’s secretary, Betty Currie.

The current presidential family is trying to decide on what type of dog best fits their lifestyle. Mich elle Obama leans towards rescuing a Portuguese water dog while other members ponder a Labradoodle, which is a cross between a Labrador retriever and standard Poodle. Portuguese water dog owners are concerned that there will be a spike in popularity in the breed that will taper off leaving many abandoned. Portuguese water dogs are not recommended for first time dog owners as they require extensive training. Stu Freedman, president of the Portuguese Water Dog Club of America, was quoted as stating, “These are dogs that if you don’t keep them busy, they will be busy and do something you don’t want them to do.”

International Polar Bear Day

February 27, 2009 is International Polar Bear Day. Polar bears have small bumps on their paws, papillae, which help keep them from slipping on ice. Their claws help them catch prey such as seals and their nose is able to detect prey miles away.

Polar bears may not yet be an endangered species although listed on the threatened list under the federal Endangered Species Act in May 2008. Dangers to polar bears include hunting, pollution, poaching and industry. The largest threat to their survival is global warming, climate change. The warmer weather causes the loss of sea ice which reduces their habitat where they hunt, breed and den. Loss of sea ice results in a shortage of food which in turn increases the morality rate of cubs. In Alaska, the number of cubs that reach a first birthday is down 65% from 15 years ago.

Norwegian Forest Cats

These beauties are a domestic cat native to Northern Europe. Norwegian Forest Cats are an intelligent, robust and playful breed. They like the outdoors and are well suited to colder climates.

Norwegian Forest Cats have a tick, fluffy, double-layered coat, tuffed ears and a long bushy tail to protect them from the cold. Their coats are double layered, with a coarse outer layer and a dense under layer, which makes their coat essentially waterproof. They are known for their intelligence, playfulness and patience, making them a good pet for families with children. They enjoy high vantage points where you will often see them on top of appliances, bookshelves or any where else they can get up high.

The Norwegian Forest Cats are bigger boned than most domestic cats with the male weighing an average of 13 to 22 lbs. The female will be about 1/2 the males size.

15th Annual Spay Day USA

February 24, 2009 marked the 15th annual Spay Day USA. Spay Day USA takes place each year on the last Tuesday in February. The Doris Day Animal League originally created the event in 1995. The Humane Society of the United States joined the campaign in 2006. They hope to inspire people to spay or neuter their pets to save animal lives.

Over 3 million cats and dogs are euthanized in U.S. shelters each year. Spaying or neutering is a proven method to reduce the number of animals being put down. An unsprayed cat can produce 18 kittens a year and an unsprayed dog can give birth to 20 puppies a year. Many of these offspring end up homeless in animal shelters only to be a victim of euthanasia.

Chloe’s Bill- IL puppy mill legislation proposal

A Cocker Spaniel named Chloe inspired Illinois legislation intended to regulate commercial dog breeders and is the namesake of the bill. Chloe is the sole survivor of her litter that was seized from an unlicensed breeding facility. The conditions in which Chloe and her siblings lived were deplorable. There were dozens of wire cages stacked upon each other. The pups were infested with fleas, soaked in urine, caked in feces and suffering from internal parasites. The legislation is intended to crackdown on puppy mills that do not have the animal’s best interest at heart.

If passed, the bill would mandate the following:
*Licensing for those who intend to sell the offspring of three or more females.
*Ban anyone with felony animal cruelty convictions from obtaining a dog breeding license.
*Require breeders and pet stores to provide buyers with a dog’s full medical history.
*Require breeders and pet store owners to provide facts about the responsibilities of dog ownership and the benefits of spaying, neutering.
*Require breeders to regularly sanitize their operation to protect dogs from injury and disease along with prohibiting wire flooring. The facilities must provide proper ventilation, cooling and heating as well.
*Creation of a Dog Breeder License Act where no more than 20 dogs are allowed in a breeding facility that have not been spayed or neutered.

Penalties would range from fines to animal seizure along with license revocation.

Opponents to the bill believe that mom and pop breeders who raise litters in their home would be hurt by the bill. Surprisingly, the Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association calls the bill misguided. Their fear is that the bill would result in a spike of sales from out of state puppy mills. Yet, The Humane Society of United States and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals are supporting the bill.

Bird Migration

According to the Audubon Society study, as the average temperatures in the U.S. rises, birds are staying more northward than previously in the winter seasons. The researchers believe that this is evidence that climate change is having an affect beyond the Arctic and Antarctic regions.

More than half the U.S. bird species are spending winters farther north than they did 40 years ago and the average temperature rose about 5 degrees Fahrenheit during that time frame.

The Audubon Society will consider other factors when continuing their research such as habitat loss, insect spawning patterns, and changes in vegetation. Yet, their belief is that climate change is the most reasonable explanation for so many species of birds shifting northward in the U.S. during the last 40 years.

How Smoking Affects Pets

According to research led by Sharon M. Millberger of the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, 28.4% of participants in an online survey said they would be motivated to quit smoking if secondhand smoke was bad for their pet’s health. If second hand smoke would hurt their pets, 8.7% of the online survey participants would be motivated to ask their partners to quit and another 24% would ask their partner to smoke outside.

3300 pet owners participated in the online survey with most participants being white woman from Michigan. Of the online survey, the majority of participants have dog and/or cats.

Published evidence indicates that second hand smoke is dangerous to pets not only humans. Certain cancers in dogs and cats, allergies in dogs, and eye/skin diseases along with respiratory problems in birds can be associated with exposure to tobacco smoke.

2009 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show

An oldie yet a goodie won the Best in Show title at the 133rd annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show which was held at Madison Square Garden, N.Y. A 10 year old Sussex spaniel named Stump was triumphant and set a record. Stump is the oldest winner of the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. Previously Kirby, a Papillon, who was 8 years old in 1999 held the title of oldest Best in Show winner. Stump was also the first of its breed to win the Best in Show prize.

Stump is familiar with the show as he had won the sporting category in 2004 before retiring. Stump had retired in 2005 due to a bacterial infection that almost killed him.

Dogs are judged by how well they fit the breed standards such as their structure, characteristics, movement and how they “show”. Stump’s breed originated in Sussex, England hence the name of the breed and they are known for their short legs and agility as a hunting companion.

There were around 2500 contestants that were made up of 170 breeds and varieties.

Stump’s formal name is Clussexx Three D Grinchy Glee. His handler is Scott Sommer. His owners are Cecilia Ruggles and Beth Dowd.

Cocoa Mulch - Dangerous for your Pets

“Please tell every dog or cat owner you know. Even if you don't have a pet, please pass this to those who do.

Over the weekend the doting owner of two young lab mixes purchased Cocoa Mulch from Target to use in their garden. They loved the way it smelled and it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden. Their dog Calypso decided that the mulch smelled good enough to eat and devoured a large helping. She vomited a few times which was typical when she eats something new but wasn't acting lethargic in any way. The next day, Mom woke up and took Calypso out for her morning walk. Half way through the walk, she had a seizure and died instantly.

Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on the label, upon further investigation on the company's website, this product is HIGHLY toxic to dogs and cats.

Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey's, and they claim that 'It is true that studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that eat Cocoa Mulch can suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees (depending on each individual dog). However, 98% of all dogs won't eat it.

Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Foreman's Garden Supply and other Garden supply stores, contains a lethal ingredient called ' Theobromine'. It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths already occurred in the last 2-3 weeks. Theobromine is in all chocolate, especially dark or baker's chocolate which is toxic to dogs. Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic quantities of theobromine, a xanthine compound similar in effects to caffeine and theophylline. A dog that ingested a lethal quantity of garden mulch made from cacao bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17 hours later. Analysis of the stomach contents and the ingested cacao bean shells revealed the presence of lethal amounts of theobromine.”

Hi, I’m Ashes!!! I am a 7 year old, male, grey DSH, with a 2 paw declaw. Yep, I am another one of those cats who was returned because of allergies. I lived for years in a home and now I live in a cage through no fault of my own. I make the best of it and everyone here loves me, but I know what it's like to be part of a family, so it's particularly hard for me to be here. I require a bland diet for digestive reasons, so lots of people who look at me pass me by. Small Dogs, Big Attitudes

Many times while walking my German Shepherd we will be confronted by a small dog that barks and charges up to our dog. So many times the owner of the small dog will say, “Don’t worry, he’s all bark.” That may be true, but as the little dog barks and circles my dog, my dog is focused on the challenge the little dog is presenting, not his size.

What the small dog owner doesn’t always realize is that the bigger dog may take the little dog up on the challenge issued. Watch your dog’s body language and reaction to the challenge. The smaller dog can cause the bigger dog to become frustrated, which may lead to a fight. This can cause serious injury to the little dog.

While it can look comical to watch a smaller dog challenge a bigger dog, this should be taken very seriously by all pet owners. Serious injury can occur if we are not watchful every time dogs meet, regardless of your dog’s size.

Finding Toys

When your dog has the free run of your house, you will probably find that he leaves his toys in different rooms. I constantly find our dog’s favorite ball upstairs, but he can never seem to find it when we tell him to get his ball. To help him find his ball, we trained him to look around the house for his ball.

To train your dog to look for his toys, you first need to train him what “Find your toy” means. Start by hiding his toy in plain site and tell him to “Find your toy” and praise him when he finds it. Little by little, hide the toy in hard to find places and praise him each time he finds it.

You also need to train “Upstairs” through association. Every time you go upstairs with your dog, say “Upstairs.” Your dog will start to associate saying “Upstairs” with going upstairs. Continue this until your dog starts heading towards the stairs by himself when you say “Upstairs.”

Then you are ready for the next step. Put they toy at the top of the stairs and tell him “Upstairs, find your toy.” Your dog will now start looking for upstairs for his toy. Soon, your dog will start looking for his toys upstairs for himself without you having to retrieve the toy for him.

Snowshoe Cats

The Snowshoe can be traced back to 1960 when Dorothy Hinds Daugherty in Philadelphia, PA, found three kittens in a litter of Siamese cats with unusual markings and four white paws. Snowshoe’s come from crossing Siamese cats with bicolor American Shorthaired cats.

Snowshoe cats are said to be the ultimate people cats. While with any cat, their individual personalities vary, but overall Snowshoe cats are friendly cats that are intelligent and have strong bonds with their caregivers or companions. Snowshoes are active and inquisitive, with just a touch of aloofness that is inherited from its Siamese ancestors.

Snowshoes have muscular bodies. The males are medium to medium large in size, while the females are small to medium in size. Snowshoes are also known for their striking, beautiful blue eyes.

If you are looking for a loving companion, a Snowshoe might be the right cat for you.

Cold Weather Care

Just as people have to adjust to colder weather, our pets need to do the same. Here are some quick hints that may help protect your pet during the winter months.

Provide shelter to protect your pet from cold temperatures and the wind.

Provide straw or bedding to give your pet a warm base to lie on.

Make sure your pet’s water doesn’t freeze.

Provide your pet with extra calories to help keep him warm.

Limit outdoor exposure for puppies and older pets. Younger and older pets are more susceptible to the effects of the cold.

Avoid piling snow near fences that may allow your pet an escape route.

Don’t suddenly turn an indoor pet into an outdoor pet. It takes about one month for your pet to get accustom to the lower temperatures.

Don’t leave your pet alone in a car in either cold or hot weather. This is always dangerous.

Heroic Feline Mother Dies

Scarlett, the cat that survived a Brooklyn, NY, garage fire in 1996 after running into the flames to save her five 4-week-old kittens, died of multiple illnesses this past October. She lived with her adoptive family for more than 12 years after her harrowing ordeal.

Scarlett made international headlines following the incident. She was badly burned and required ongoing care because of her injuries.

On the day of the fire, firefighter David Giannelli spotted Scarlett after she was seen touching each of her kittens with her nose to make sure they were safe. She then fell unconscious. Giannelli took the cats to the North Shore Animal League America for treatment.

After a three-month recovery period, the kittens were adopted out in pairs and Scarlett went to live with Karen Wellen in Brooklyn, who was selected from a group of 7,000 applicants.

The North Shore Animal League created a heroism award in her name.

Xolo’s are hairless, often with short, coarse hair on the head and extremities, or single-coated with a short, smooth coat.

Xolo’s personality is attentive, fearless, calm, protective and often aloof with strangers. Their top traits are loyalty, cleanliness and intelligence. They are great companions and enjoy being around their owners in addition to making a good watch dogs.

Xolo’s skin will require some work on your part. If you live in a hot, sunny area, you will need to apply sunscreen to keep their skin from burning. If you live in a colder area, you will need to make sure your Xolo has a doggie coat to wear outside.

Homemade Suet

Birder's Delight (Nut 'n Apple Cake)

1/2 pound of suet

2 cups bread crumbs

1 cup unsalted nuts

3 chopped apples

1 cup raisins

1 cup white sugar

1/4 cup of cornmeal

1/2 cup white or whole wheat flour

1 cup of smooth or creamy peanut butter

1 cup wild bird seed

Mix all ingredients, adding enough suet as required to hold the 'cakes' together.
Shape into balls or press into pine cones.
Freeze and use as needed.

Cats with FIP

Many cats are up for adoption in shelters, such as the Human Society, that have FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis) and don’t get adopted because of his or her condition. FIP is a fatal disease in cats that is caused by a type of virus called corona virus. FIP only infects cats, which means that a cat with FIP cannot transmit the disease to other animals, including dogs. Humans are not at risk from FIP and cannot be infected by a cat with FIP.

If you do not have any other cats in your home and are thinking about getting a cat, you might want to consider adopting a cat with FIP.

Hi, my name is Sunflower. I am a 14 month old, female DSH. We were rounded up at home and driven to the shelter together. I had seven very young kittens at the time. Their eyes were not even open yet. The people who brought us said we were all strays, so the shelter staff were surprised when we all turned out to be exceptionally affectionate cats. All of the other adult cats have now been adopted except me because I was busy raising my babies in a foster home. Now they are weaned and I am looking forward to the next chapter in my life. Louie here, and I've been around the block a few times. I was a hurricane Katrina rescue, brought to Tri County and adopted. Recently, through no fault of my own, I was returned. How humiliating! I'm a bit aloof because I don't want to have my heart broken yet again, but I'm friendly and sweet and gentle. I need a home without children but I get along well with cats and other dogs. Cats on the Counter

Have you ever noticed how cats love to be on the kitchen counter? The counter is a great height to visit you, especially when your cooking and after all, if your cat is really lucky he might even be able to get a special treat without you knowing about it (until afterwards).

While there are several ways to teach your cat to stay off the counter, the most common and effective way is to place sticky, adhesive strips along the counter. An easy way to do this is to attach the adhesive strips to a plastic place mat, which makes it easy for you to remove the strips while you are working in the kitchen. You also want to give your cat an alternate place to perch where he can be high and see everything. A kitchen stool works well. When your cats sits in the chair and does not go on the counter is the time to use positive reinforcements and give your cat a treat.

You can also try to block your counters making it hard for your cat to get on them. Personally, I have never had much success with the blocking method as my cats always seem to be able to negotiate the obstacle course just fine and find it interesting and fun.
