Pig in a Blanket
Does your dog ask for bacon? I know mine does! Now you can give your dog a bacon scented treat that will naturally draw your dog into play with his new toy. The Pig in a Blanket treat-dispensing toy might look like similar toys, but it doesn’t smell like them. That’s because the Pig in a Blanket is scented like bacon to make it more appealing to dogs. Stuff the durable toy with treats or kibble to keep your dog occupied and entertained.

Pet of the Week
Ricky – Downers Grove, IL
Hi!!! My name is Ricky. I am a 6 year old, male, DSH. My early days were sketchy. I was part of a group of cats dumped on the shelter porch several years ago. I was very lucky to be adopted and have a home for a while, but recently I found myself picked up by animal control. They checked me for a microchip and were surprised to find I actually had one! I was delivered back to where I was so well cared for (WSHS) when my owners could not be found. I am hoping for a second miracle, my last one. I am a most affectionate kitty and believe it or not, we do know and appreciate when we have been saved. We pay it back in kisses and purrs.
If you'd like to meet me, please contact the West Suburban Humane Society, 1901 W. Ogden Ave, Downers Grove, IL, phone number 630-960-9600. http://www.wshs-dg.org/wshs/
Nestle - Tampa Bay, FL
Hey there, I'm Nestle! I'm an adult kitty (4 years old) who's looking for the right kind of home to belong to. My personality is a little rough around the edges because I'm a very protective girl. People have probably treated me poorly in the past, and now I'm just waiting for the right family to be patient with me. This way I will have the opportunity to come around, adjust and be trusting. I'm very beautiful and sweet given the opportunity, but the challenge will be in the very beginning while I'm getting used to a new person and a new home. I've been here at the shelter for a very long time but I feel it's because the right person just hasn't come along. I'm desperately willing to give you a chance if you will just give me a chance. My adoption fee is only $25.00 for the perfect owners.
For more information please contact the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, 3607 N. Armenia Ave., Tampa FL, 33607, (813) 876-7138. http://www.humanesocietytampa.org/
Eve – Tampa Bay, FL
Hello everyone, I'm Eve! I'm a beautiful one year old, Shepherd mix, girl with an inspiring story. I was brought to The Humane Society of Tampa Bay with my newborn babies. My previous owners were going through a rough time and they just couldn't keep the whole bunch of us. My seven babies and I were very well taken care of and they all grew up to be super adorable kids who found great homes! Now I'm ready for a vacation!! I've got my whole life ahead of me to share with a special family that would show me the same kind of love and kindness I'm willing to show them. Please give me a chance at a happy life!

Roscoe – Boca Raton, FL
I'm Roscoe, a shy little guy trying to break out of my shell. I am a 7 year old, 15 lb, male, Beagle mix. You'll see that I come to the front of my cage to meet you but then chicken out and run back. I'm scared but sweet, just a low-to-the-ground dog who'd really love to be yours. I like other, kind dogs and older kids, but no cat siblings for me, please. I'm timid but I know I'll adjust well to some good, old-fashioned TLC. Take me home and teach me what forever means!
I’m waiting right here at Tri County Humane Society, 21287 Boca Rio Road, Boca Raton. (561) 482-8110. http://www.tricountyhumane.org/.

Snowshoe Cats
The Snowshoe can be traced back to 1960 when Dorothy Hinds Daugherty in Philadelphia, PA, found three kittens in a litter of Siamese cats with unusual markings and four white paws. Snowshoe’s come from crossing Siamese cats with bicolor American Shorthaired cats.
Snowshoe cats are said to be the ultimate people cats. While with any cat, their individual personalities vary, but overall Snowshoe cats are friendly cats that are intelligent and have strong bonds with their caregivers or companions. Snowshoes are active and inquisitive, with just a touch of aloofness that is inherited from its Siamese ancestors.
Snowshoes have muscular bodies. The males are medium to medium large in size, while the females are small to medium in size. Snowshoes are also known for their striking, beautiful blue eyes.
If you are looking for a loving companion, a Snowshoe might be the right cat for you.

MOLLY – Boca Raton, FL
Can I be your girl?
I've got it ALL, except for a HOME. I'm Molly, and I'm a wonderful girl so I'm sure my being homeless must be some mistake! First, about me....I'm a housebroken and spayed cutie. I'm a 3 year-old spayed female Spaniel / Terrier mix, just 35 lbs. I know how to sit, lay down, shake, and be a loyal best friend. I get along fine with kids, dogs and 'probably' cats. Now for you.....a cozy home and a big heart. Must love dogs, playing outdoors, an active lifestyle, and having a big, furry, adorable face giving you kisses! I don't love being in a cage, so can you come today please?
Ask for Molly! I’m waiting right here at Tri County Humane Society, 21287 Boca Rio Road, Boca Raton. (561) 482-8110. www.tricountyhumane.org.
Putt Putt - Downers Grove, IL
Hi, my name is Putt Putt. I am a five month old, male, black and white DSH. My siblings and I were born outside, under a deck, to a feral mom. When we were old enough to be taken away from our mom, the family that lived there trapped us and brought us to the shelter. The shelter sent us to a temporary care home so that we could be socialized and get used to being handled by people. I am a shy and independent young guy. I like to be petted but really don't like to be handled too much. I am great with other cats. Because of my shy nature, I would do best in a home with children 10 years and older. If you have a quiet home and are looking for a sweet, quiet cat, then I'm your guy. Stop by and visit me soon!
If you'd like to meet me, please contact the West Suburban Humane Society, 1901 W. Ogden Ave, Downers Grove, IL, phone number 630-960-9600. http://www.wshs-dg.org/wshs/

Cold Weather Care
Just as people have to adjust to colder weather, our pets need to do the same. Here are some quick hints that may help protect your pet during the winter months.
Provide shelter to protect your pet from cold temperatures and the wind.
Provide straw or bedding to give your pet a warm base to lie on.
Make sure your pet’s water doesn’t freeze.
Provide your pet with extra calories to help keep him warm.
Limit outdoor exposure for puppies and older pets. Younger and older pets are more susceptible to the effects of the cold.
Avoid piling snow near fences that may allow your pet an escape route.
Don’t suddenly turn an indoor pet into an outdoor pet. It takes about one month for your pet to get accustom to the lower temperatures.
Don’t leave your pet alone in a car in either cold or hot weather. This is always dangerous.

McCarthy – Tampa Bay, FL
Hi!!! My name is McCarthy and I am looking for my forever home. I am a 7 years old, male, Hound mix. I've been through a lot of things in my life and I'm looking for a positive and bright future. Because of my past, I have lost some of my teeth and I have some scarring on my hips from injuries. I'm all better now and I would very much like a home and a family to spend the rest of my days with. Could you be that person???
For more information please contact the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, 3607 N. Armenia Ave., Tampa FL, 33607, (813) 876-7138. http://www.humanesocietytampa.org/
Tigger – Downers Grove, IL
Hi, I’m Tigger! I am an eight year old, female, 2-paw declawed, calico. You really have to meet me to appreciate my beauty. At least that's what they say around here. I got moved to the penthouse at the shelter because I really don't like other cats. I prefer to have all of your attention on me. I don't mind sharing you with a dog because, well, it's a dog.....need I say more? Seriously, I will get along in a family as long as there are no other cats and you don't try to carry me around too much. I'd really like a family where I could come sit on your laps while you watch TV. and have the independence to be on my own sometimes. Don't you like to have your own space?
If you'd like to meet me, please contact the West Suburban Humane Society, 1901 W. Ogden Ave, Downers Grove, IL, phone number 630-960-9600. http://www.wshs-dg.org/wshs/

Does your dog eat too fast?
If your dog eats too fast, he can be at risk of bloating, which is dangerous for dogs. The Brake-fast bowls help reduce the risk of bloating by making dogs eat slower. Slower eating makes your pet feel full and reduces the instances of “re-eating.” The bowl works with both wet and dry food, has a no-tip shape and is durable and dishwasher safe.

Heroic Feline Mother Dies
Scarlett, the cat that survived a Brooklyn, NY, garage fire in 1996 after running into the flames to save her five 4-week-old kittens, died of multiple illnesses this past October. She lived with her adoptive family for more than 12 years after her harrowing ordeal.
Scarlett made international headlines following the incident. She was badly burned and required ongoing care because of her injuries.
On the day of the fire, firefighter David Giannelli spotted Scarlett after she was seen touching each of her kittens with her nose to make sure they were safe. She then fell unconscious. Giannelli took the cats to the North Shore Animal League America for treatment.
After a three-month recovery period, the kittens were adopted out in pairs and Scarlett went to live with Karen Wellen in Brooklyn, who was selected from a group of 7,000 applicants.
The North Shore Animal League created a heroism award in her name.

Lone Ranger – Downers Grove, IL
Hi, my name is Lone Ranger! I am a 5 month old, male, cattle dog mix. I am a sweet and friendly guy that is looking for his forever home. I am good with kids, cats and other dogs. Because of my age, I would benefit from crate training and obedience training. With a little time and effort, I will make an excellent pet for some lucky family. Could that family be yours?
If you'd like to meet me, please contact the West Suburban Humane Society, 1901 W. Ogden Ave, Downers Grove, IL, phone number 630-960-9600. http://www.wshs-dg.org/wshs/
Audrey – Boca Raton, FL
Hi, my name is Audrey! I am a 1 year old, female, Boxer/Black Lab mix. I'm a very good girl who's house-hunting. Most important is a nice family to come with the house! My life took a big turn recently when I was left tied to the gate here at Tri County by someone who could no longer care for me. I'm making the best of being homeless until you find me here. I'm sweet and well behaved and I get along with other dogs. I'm quite energetic, so a home with older kids would be nice. I'm very house-trained and also know how to 'sit' and 'shake' on request. Help a girl out?
I'll wait right here at Tri County Humane Society, 21287 Boca Rio Road, Boca Raton. (561) 482-8110. www.tricountyhumane.org.
Xoloitzcuintli (Xolo) dogs
Are you thinking about getting a dog, but hate pet hair around the house? Then maybe a Xolo (Xoloitzuintil) is for you!
Xolo’s are hairless, often with short, coarse hair on the head and extremities, or single-coated with a short, smooth coat.
Xolo’s personality is attentive, fearless, calm, protective and often aloof with strangers. Their top traits are loyalty, cleanliness and intelligence. They are great companions and enjoy being around their owners in addition to making a good watch dogs.
Xolo’s skin will require some work on your part. If you live in a hot, sunny area, you will need to apply sunscreen to keep their skin from burning. If you live in a colder area, you will need to make sure your Xolo has a doggie coat to wear outside.
