Pet of the Week

Frank – Boca Raton, FL

Jack Russell. 6 year-old neutered male, 15 lbs. and housebroken.
Frank here, nice to meet ya! Hey, can you help a good little guy out with a home and maybe some treats? I'm a little down on my luck but I'm sure better days are ahead. I was found running the streets and turned in here, where they tell me I'm safe and will find a home. I think I had one once, because I'm housebroken and neutered and very friendly. I can live with older kids and most dogs (cats, unknown). I'm spunky and ready to meet you. Maybe we're a match....follow your heart!

I'll wait right here at Tri County Humane Society, 21287 Boca Rio Road, Boca Raton. (561) 482-8110.

Sarabi – Downers Grove, IL

Hi, my name is Sarabi! I am a 2 year old, female, grey tabby. Every day, visitors come and go from the cattery and every day I get my hopes up that this will be the day someone chooses me. I don't really stand out among the other cats. There's a bunch of us grey kitties and I'm kind of shy to start out with. When I am in a home, I'm able to relax and show my true nature. Here I am like the bud of a flower, all tight and closed, but if you choose me you'll be rewarded with the most interesting flower. Please make my day (and yours) by choosing me!

Finch Feeder

The Kaytee Finch Station 2 makes attracting and feeding finches easier than ever as they adore soft mesh socks and prefer them over traditional tube feeders. The unique, Squiggle Sock design provides more surface area that enables finches to perch wherever they want, and allows for numerous birds to eat at one time. The weather-resistant dome reservoir which holds extra seed, automatically keeps the sock filled longer. Each feeder comes with one sock for initial use and one for replacement. Feeder holds 3.5 lbs. of food. Mesh socks are refillable and measure 18”.

I use this Finch Feeder and the birds love it! I have counted more than 25 birds on the feeder at one time. Also works great for kitty TV if you put it close to a window.

Cats with FIP

Many cats are up for adoption in shelters, such as the Human Society, that have FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis) and don’t get adopted because of his or her condition. FIP is a fatal disease in cats that is caused by a type of virus called corona virus. FIP only infects cats, which means that a cat with FIP cannot transmit the disease to other animals, including dogs. Humans are not at risk from FIP and cannot be infected by a cat with FIP.

If you do not have any other cats in your home and are thinking about getting a cat, you might want to consider adopting a cat with FIP.

Pet of the Week

Sunflower – Downers Grove, IL

Hi, my name is Sunflower. I am a 14 month old, female DSH. We were rounded up at home and driven to the shelter together. I had seven very young kittens at the time. Their eyes were not even open yet. The people who brought us said we were all strays, so the shelter staff were surprised when we all turned out to be exceptionally affectionate cats. All of the other adult cats have now been adopted except me because I was busy raising my babies in a foster home. Now they are weaned and I am looking forward to the next chapter in my life. Will you be the author?

Louie – Boca Raton, FL

Hound / Lab mix. 3 year-old neutered male, 55 lbs.
Louie here, and I've been around the block a few times. I was a hurricane Katrina rescue, brought to Tri County and adopted. Recently, through no fault of my own, I was returned. How humiliating! I'm a bit aloof because I don't want to have my heart broken yet again, but I'm friendly and sweet and gentle. I need a home without children but I get along well with cats and other dogs. I'm housebroken and calm, just a bit shy. I could use some good food, but mostly I need a loving home and lots of TLC, finally!

I'll wait right here at Tri County Humane Society, 21287 Boca Rio Road, Boca Raton. (561) 482-8110.

Cats on the Counter

Have you ever noticed how cats love to be on the kitchen counter? The counter is a great height to visit you, especially when your cooking and after all, if your cat is really lucky he might even be able to get a special treat without you knowing about it (until afterwards).

While there are several ways to teach your cat to stay off the counter, the most common and effective way is to place sticky, adhesive strips along the counter. An easy way to do this is to attach the adhesive strips to a plastic place mat, which makes it easy for you to remove the strips while you are working in the kitchen. You also want to give your cat an alternate place to perch where he can be high and see everything. A kitchen stool works well. When your cats sits in the chair and does not go on the counter is the time to use positive reinforcements and give your cat a treat.

You can also try to block your counters making it hard for your cat to get on them. Personally, I have never had much success with the blocking method as my cats always seem to be able to negotiate the obstacle course just fine and find it interesting and fun.

Please share any techniques you have used that have worked.

Lenny – Downers Grove, IL

Hi, my name is Lenny! I am a 3 year old, male, DMH. I have the dubious distinction of being the only cat at WSHS that is FIV positive. Fate smiled on me when some kids found me, victim of a bad cat fight, and alerted an adult who brought me here. He even drove me to the shelter's vet where I spent over a week healing from my wounds. It took a while before the FIV (the feline form of HIV) became known. Now that I am recovered from my original wounds and getting such great care, I am able to show my gratitude to those at the shelter who take care of me. I am a model kitty. The only thing is, I think the folks here are worried. They know my disease is no threat to the other cats, but they worry about me catching something because my immune system is compromised and the only cage available to me is in isolation, which is where all the sick cats get well. If you are looking for a cat who really needs you, that would be me. I can live as an only cat, with dogs, or with other FIV positive cats.

If you'd like to meet me, please contact the West Suburban Humane Society, 1901 W. Ogden Ave, Downers Grove, IL, phone number 630-960-9600.

Fay – Tampa Bay, FL

Hi, I'm Fay! I am a 5 year old, female, DLH. I've been at the shelter for a little while but I'm still getting used to this hectic environment. I'm a very sweet girl but it's such a scary new world and it takes me a little bit of time to show how wonderful I am. Please be patient with me, I have the potential to be a real love and a great companion. I'm a Meet Your Match Purple - Private Investigator which means that I'm very curious, especially in new places. I also have a special kitty price of only $25 since I have been at the Humane Society of Tampa Bay for such a long time. Please come visit me and I promise to show you just how great I can be!

Gilligan – Boca Raton, Fl

I'm Gilligan, and here I am with about 90 other cats, trying to win someone over and find a home. About 30 of us are black cats, which statistically have a tougher time being adopted for some reason. SO......what's so special about ME? Sit down and I'll tell you.
First, I am a handsome, glossy black youngster, under a year old and somewhat small. I'm neutered and I can live happily with other cats. I have none of that 'catitude' that many felines demonstrate, either! I'm a real lover boy who adores being held and petted. I will creep up to the area of your neck to snuggle, and purr happily in your ear to show how much I appreciate you. I'd really love a home for the holidays. Purr-haps we can be friends forever, so come to meet me. Ask for Gilligan, and make me your 'little buddy'!

I'll wait right here at Tri County Humane Society, 21287 Boca Rio Road, Boca Raton. (561) 482-8110.

Drink Better Bowl

Help your dog to drink slower, and make less mess! The Drink Better™ pet bowl encourages dogs to drink at a slower, healthier rate, and make less mess while they’re at it. Besides making a wet mess, dogs that drink too fast can experience digestive problems such as indigestion and vomiting, and light-haired dogs may experience staining of the muzzle (from chlorinated water).

The Drink Better bowl uses a floating obstacle to control the flow of water, encouraging dogs to drink slower and take only as much as they need, without soaking their ears and muzzles or slopping water around the feeding area.

Along with the Eat Better bowl, the Drink Better bowl encourages dogs to adopt a slower, healthier pace at mealtimes.

The Drink Better bowl:
Prevents dogs from drinking too fast.
Helps dogs avoid soaking their ears and muzzle.
Minimizes the mess left by a sloppy drinker.
Ensures your dog’s comfort with a smooth and ergonomic design.
Sturdy non-skid design, constructed of K-Resin SBC — a high-quality food-grade polymer.

Chuck – Downers Grove, IL

Hi!!! I’m Chuck, a 3 year old, male, orange tabby. I was adopted from this shelter when I was still very young, It has been a hard road because I was let outside in my home. The folks here want to let me roam, but I go for the doors a lot. For me to get adopted will be a miracle, I have had to have surgery on my ear to fix chronic ear infections. I am hoping that this time did the trick, but we'll see. I am beloved here at the shelter for all I have been through, but the deepest wish of everyone here, which I share, is that I find a home where I will be a priority and never let outside again.

Missy – Boca Raton, FL

MISSY - LOOKING FOR LOVE TO HEAL HER SOUL

I'm Missy, a 2 year-old Catahoula Hound mix, housebroken and about 60 lbs.
You may not notice me as you pass my cage because I'm very shy and often stay in the back where I feel safer. I was brought here as a pregnant stray and I had some cute puppies who have all found homes. Thankfully, they were able to come into the world without the fears that I've collected from life on the streets. I'm learning from the volunteers and staff here that I can trust people and I do enjoy petting and sweet talk, but I really need a home of my very own and some kindness and consistent love. I seem to prefer ladies and become more timid with men. Shelter life is too stressful and noisy for my tender soul. I get along fine with older, gentle kids and with cats and other dogs. If you ask to meet me, you'll see that I'm a sweet, gentle, precious girl who just needs a chance to blossom with consistent TLC. I have a pretty, brindled face with soft brown eyes that you'll fall in love with. Give me a chance?

I'll wait right here at Tri County Humane Society, 21287 Boca Rio Road, Boca Raton. (561) 482-8110.

Click for Charity

The Animal Rescue Site focuses the power of the Internet on a specific need — providing food for some of the 27 million unwanted animals given to shelters in the U.S. every year. Over 10 million animals are put to death every year in the U.S. alone because they are abandoned and unwanted.

Each click on the purple "Click Here to Give - it's FREE" button at The Animal Rescue Site provides food and care for a rescued animal living in a shelter or sanctuary. Funding for food and care is paid by site sponsors and distributed to animals in need at the Fund for Animals' renowned animal sanctuaries (including Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch in Texas and the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in California), pet shelters supported by the Petfinder Foundation , North Shore Animal League , and other worthy animal care facilities supported by the GreaterGood.org foundation.

Dogs and Wood Fences

If you have a wood fence around your yard, you know that this can sometimes cause your dog distress as he can’t see what he can hear or smell. The inability to see through the fence caused our dog to bark, a lot!

We put up a completely enclosed wood fence around our yard thinking it would be nice for our dog. But, we quickly learned that our dog started barking all the time. He would bark at other animals, the neighbors, different smells and different sounds. We found that the increased in barking was caused by our dog’s inability to see what was causing the sound or smell. The fence is already up, so what do you do? You might want to get a Pet Peek. The Pet Peek allows your dog to view what is on the other side of the fence, in a safe and secure manner. It is made of durable, clear, hard acrylic 9.5 dome that you can install yourself in your fence.

This might actually help your dog to stop barking, in addition to giving him some more entertainment by seeing what is on the other side of the fence. The grass might not be greener, but at least he can check it out!

Keep Fido off the couch

Many pet owners do not want their dog on the couch and have tried many creative ways to train their dog to stay off the couch. Some have tried putting bubble wrap on the sofa, spraying the furniture with a dog repellent, or even putting mouse traps on the furniture. While these methods might have some success, the training is not a positive experience for your dog.

If you want your dog to stay off the furniture, try giving your dog furniture of his own, like a nice dog bed to lie in. Every time your dog goes to his doggie bed give him a treat, such as a toy with a treat inside. When the dog leaves his bed make sure to remove the treat. After a while Fido will go to his bed when you tell him to and he will no longer be using your furniture to lounge on.

Pet of the Week

Palin – Downers Grove, IL

Hi!!! My name is Palin. I am a 10 month old, female hound mix. I was picked up as a stray and taken to DuPage Animal Control. They held me for the appropriate amount of time but no one ever claimed me. They didn't have room to hang on to me so the nice people at WSHS took me in. I am a sweet girl that is full of energy. I am good with other dogs and cats. My favorite game is tug of war and I love to play with stuffed animals. Because of my age, I would benefit from obedience training. If I sound like a good fit for you and your family, stop by and pay me a visit. You won't be disappointed!

If you’d like to see me please contact the West Suburban Humane Society, 1901 W. Ogden Ave, Downers Grove, IL, phone number 630-960-9600.

Carmel – Boca Raton, FL

Hi!! My name is Carmel. I am a 2 year-old female, 35 lbs. Shepherd mix and I'm looking for a home, so they told me to sit nicely for my picture and I did. Can you believe this cute little happy face is homeless? How can that be? No matter, I know someone wonderful is coming for me soon. (Are YOU wonderful?). I'm housebroken and charming, just a wee bit shy. I get along well with other dogs and with children. I had some pups, and you can imagine how ADORABLE they are....they look like their mom! Now it's my time to shine, and shine I will as soon as you show up here and our hearts meet!

Hi, My name is Scooby! I am a 7 year-old neutered male, 65 lbs. Lab mix. RUH RO! What am I doing here? I had a home but seem to have lost it due to the economy.
