Baby – Tampa, FL

Hi! My name is Baby. I’m a handsome black boy that was brought into the shelter originally after my family became homeless. I’m a special kitty that has a birth defect that makes my right leg shorter than my left, although you would never know it. I can run and play like everyone else. It doesn’t affect me in the slightest, but it is one of the first things you’ll notice about me; but it just adds to my character! I am very reserved and sweet! My favorite toys include paper balls and string, so I’m easily entertained. According to my previous owners, I get along well with other cats, and have lived in a home with other dogs before, although I tend to ignore them. Children sometimes make me nervous, so I would do best in an adult only environment. I’m also a Meet Your Match Purple Private Investigator. This means that, “I’m working undercover to keep an eye on you and your household. You may not even know you’re under surveillance. I can vanish into thin air if anyone or anything interferes with my investigation. I was brought in with my brother, who has since been adopted, so now I’m waiting for my chance to have a new forever home. Mambo – Downers Grove, IL

Hi, my name is Mambo. I was recently returned to the shelter because I became too protective of my elderly owners. The staff at WSHS felt that I could use some training so they sent me to a 2 week training class at Suburban K-9 in Barlett. Well, I am back from training (and better than ever I might add!) and ready to find my forever home. I now know all of my basic obedience commands and am leash trained. I am good with other dogs. I just love to play. I need to live in an adult home only with a family that has previous dog experience. I even come with a free session with my owner personal trainer.

Cadence – Tampa, FL

Hey, I’m Cadence! I was brought into the HSTB with a chain imbedded in my neck that had to be surgically removed. Since I was chained up for all those years I developed a little incontinence problem. The vet here set me up with some inexpensive pills that I’ll need to take twice a day. I’ve been in foster care since I came in. My foster mom & the vet noticed that my neck wasn’t healing a after the first surgery, so they went in to take a closer look and found that there was and elastic pony tail band completely imbedded under skin! The band was extracted and now I’m working on getting better and enjoying a comfortable life! It is still important that the cats and dogs stay away from my food though! I discovered that I like to run and play and give kisses. My dream would be to go to a home with someone who can spend a lot of time with me as I do have to go outside every four hours or so. I am completely housebroken and never had an accident the whole month that I was with my foster family. My foster dad works from home and I just lounge around in the office with him until it is time for me and his two other little dogs to go outside! Akeela – Downers Grove, IL

Hi, I’m Akeela! I was adopted from this shelter as a kitten. Somehow I ended up at an animal control facility where I had been picked up as a stray. I was in pretty rough shape, but after a few weeks, my gorgeous coat returned as did my health. My markings are pretty unique and I am a very loving boy. Everyone who visits the cattery is treated with enthusiasm by me, with paws reaching out in greeting. I try my darndest to make everyone notice me. Sometimes people call me a circus clown because of my funny antics. I came from a puppy mill which just means I didn’t have much time to be socialized. I can be a little scared when things get too noisy or there’s too much movement, so a home with small kids might not be the most comfortable environment for me. Texas – Downers Grove, IL

Howdy y’all, my name is Texas. I have had a pretty hard life and I’m about nine years old. I am a medium sized neutered Shepherd Mix I was owned by an elderly lady who passed away in May. Her family didn't want me so they brought me here to the West Suburban Humane Society. My owner loved me but because she was elderly she never took me for a walk, never took me to the vet or socialized me around other animals. I didn't even know how to walk on a leash. Although, I am house trained. The shelter decided that I needed some work so they sent me to Midwest Canine Behavioral and Socialization Center in Des Plaines for two weeks of training. While I was there I learned all of my basic obedience commands, "sit", "down", "heel", "stay", and "come". I got along ok with the other dogs in day care but I would prefer to be the only pet in the household. I don't trust new people immediately, it takes me awhile to warm up. Once I do though, I will be your best friend for life. I am looking for a quiet home that won't expect too much of me and will let me live out the rest of my life in a safe, comfortable environment. Baby – Tampa Bay, FL

Hello everyone, I’m Baby! I’m special girl with an amazing story, and I’m truly lucky to be alive. I was found a few months back at a construction site in the bay area. The workers there noticed that I was pregnant and fairly unhealthy, so they kept an eye on me to make sure I was okay. When I came closer to giving birth, one of workers took me home and cared of me until I had my pups. Everyone made it okay, and he quickly made arrangements to bring us into the HSTB. Shortly after, all my kids found wonderful homes, but the staff at the shelter took notice that I had Heartworm Disease. Right now I am heartworm positive, and I’m undergoing treatments so that I can be at my full potential when I’m done. I’m available through the foster to adopt program in the meantime. It’s very important that I maintain a low activity level, and that I’m living in a stress-free environment while I am undergoing treatment. That means short walks only, and no getting excited!! I know this is a hard situation for both myself and a potential adopter, but as soon as I’m done with my treatments I’ll be free to run, play, and wag my tail as much as possible. Jillian – Downers Grove, IL

I’m introduced as Jillian yet I am a bit timid even if called by name. Three years ago I was born to this intimidating world. I am a female spayed brown tabby who still has her claws. When you visit the shelter, one of the first places you will see cats is called the “Shy Cat Room.” This is where I live and if it weren't for this room, I'd be living outside. You see, I was living in an area with many outdoor cats, who have litter after litter, year after year. I was trapped by a shelter volunteer who was planning to have me spayed and released back to my yard. This is a great option for cats who are too afraid of people to be taken inside, but this volunteer saw something in me that made her think I might be able to be socialized. If it weren't for the shy cat room, I would not have stood a chance, but here I am, and I have been coming out of my shell gradually. I would like to live in a home with other cats. I’m not sure how I feel about children or dogs as most were a scary experience when I was out alone in the world. I need a home where my people will be patient with me. It will be a slow road, but one worth going down.

They call me Harold and I’m pleased to make your acquaintance. I'm a medium sized Spaniel Mix that’s a sweet, gentle, boy who's as calm as they come. I was born around 1996 which makes me 13 years young. I'm a little shy around men, but I've grown to love the male volunteers at WSHS quickly. I'm fine around cats and kids over 8 years old. I don't really like other dogs, but I'm house-trained, crate-trained, neutered and I easily walk on a leash. I'm currently in a temporary care home and I'm doing great here. We'd keep each other forever, but my foster family's living situation prevents them from becoming my forever family. Salutations to you all from me, Munchkin. I’m a black and white DMH female that is around 19 months old. I am spayed yet not declawed. I want to be queen of my castle. That's okay, isn't it? I just don't want to share your affection with any other cats. I was found crossing one of the busiest streets in DeKalb. My rescuers were surprised that no one was looking for me because it was clear that I belonged to someone. They posted fliers all over, but no luck. Hi, my name is Camper. I am a 16 month old, male, Shepherd mix. Life has not always been kind to me. I have not been treated nicely in the past, therefore, I don't readily trust people. The staff at WSHS recognized that not long after my arrival. They decided that I could use some one on one time with a trainer. I just got back from Bark Avenue Daycamp in Barlett where I spent two week learning all of my basic commands. I now know "sit", "down", "stay", "come", and "heel". I am much better but I still have a ways to go. I am going to need a special home that is kind and patient and willing to work with me on my trust issues. Ms. Face – Tampa Bay, FL

Hi, I’m Ms. Face. Don't let first impressions fool you! I may look a little rough around the edges but I've got tons of potential! I came in to the shelter as an original stray with TONS of silver and smoke colored fur. Unfortunately I had to have my coat shaved off since I was never brushed, and it started to turn into big knots and mats. I still have my face, tail, and foot fur so I look like I'm wearing snow boots! Contrary to my appearance, I am a very sweet and very beautiful Persian girl! I definitely had a home at some time in my life and I'm looking for that love from an owner once again. I'm very well socialized, sweet natured, and litter box trained. I'd make the perfect pet for any type of family since I'm easily adaptable to any situation whether it's an elderly laid back family or a high energy family with young kids. I was recently taken to West Suburban Humane Society because my owner became ill and could no longer take care of me. I am a friendly little guy that is full of energy. I was housebroken and crate trained in my previous home. I am good with other dogs though I do tend to play a little rough with cats. I tend to be a little shy in certain situations, so I will need help building my confidence. I would also benefit from obedience training. My ideal home would have children 10 years and older as I tend to be a little possessive of rawhides as well as my food. Hi, I’m Ashes!!! I am a 7 year old, male, grey DSH, with a 2 paw declaw. Yep, I am another one of those cats who was returned because of allergies. I lived for years in a home and now I live in a cage through no fault of my own. I make the best of it and everyone here loves me, but I know what it's like to be part of a family, so it's particularly hard for me to be here. I require a bland diet for digestive reasons, so lots of people who look at me pass me by. My food is available from any vet and it only costs a little more than regular cat food; sort of like getting Starbuck's instead of gas station coffee.
